Czech Central Bank: Renminbi Inclusion In IMF SDRs Questionable

19 May 2011 07:11 EDT

BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--Adding China's renminbi to the currencies included in the International Monetary Fund's Special Drawing Rights is a complicated decision, given its relation to the U.S. dollar, the Deputy Governor of the Czech Central Bank said Thursday.

"It doesn't make much sense to include yet another U.S. dollar in another form, the question is whether Europe wants to make any concessions in extending the SDR basket," Mojmir Hampl said in a panel discussion here, adding that the currency itself would change if China altered its exchange rate policy.

"The renminbi will be a different currency to what it is now, but maybe this should be the goal."

SDRs are the supplementary reserves of foreign-exchange assets held by the IMF.
