The Basel Committee

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) operates at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). It was established in 1974 by the G10 central banks.

The Committee draws up banking supervisory standards and recommendations. The most significant of these include the International Standards on Capital Adequacy and the Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision. In addition, the Committee focuses on enhancing cooperation and regular exchange of information in the banking supervisory area.

As regards regional cooperation, the Czech National Bank is a member of the Group of Banking Supervisors from Central and Eastern Europe (BSCEE), which fosters the exchange of information in the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe and, with its 11 EU members and 11 non-EU members, provides support in the field of banking regulation and supervision for countries preparing to join the EU.
