Tomáš Holub elected CES President

The Czech Economic Society (CES) has a new executive management. On Wednesday, 25 January, the CES Presidium elected Tomáš Holub (Czech National Bank and Institute of Economic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University) as the new President for the next two-year term. Luboš Komárek (CNB) was elected Vice-President, and Martin Macháček (Technical University Ostrava), Daniel Münich (CERGE-EI) and Michal Skořepa (CNB) were elected members of the Executive Committee.


The Czech Economic Society (CES) was established in 1993 as the successor of the Czechoslovak Economic Society, founded at the start of the 1960s. At present, the CES is a civic association. Its mission is to promote the development and popularisation of economics in the Czech Republic. For this purpose it organises special lectures and seminars as well as the competitions "Young Economist of the Year" and the "Karel Engliš Prize". It also awards the CES Prize for long-term contribution to the development of Czech economic studies. The most important of the CES's activities is the Annual Conference. At the Third Annual Conference of the CES, which was held in November 2004 at the Prague University of Economics, almost 200 specialists took part and more than 50 speeches were delivered. The next Fourth Annual Conference will take place in autumn 2006, again at the Prague University of Economics. The CES is a member of the Council of Scientific Societies of the Czech Academy of Science and a member of the International Economic Association (IEA). At present it has 278 members.
