CNB to issue a CZK 5,000 banknote with an additional print and two commemorative CZK 100 banknotes
The Czech National Bank (CNB) is planning to issue three new banknotes. In September 2026, it will issue a CZK 5,000 circulating banknote with a unique holographic print. It will issue two commemorative CZK 100 banknotes in late 2027 or early 2028.
The CZK 5,000 banknote with a unique holographic print will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the first independent central bank of Czechoslovakia – the National Bank of Czechoslovakia. The print consists of foil with nano effects hot-stamped on the 2023 version of the CZK 5,000 banknote. The main motif of the nanostructure is the CNB’s anniversary logo marking the 100th anniversary of the commencement of operations of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia. The main motif is complemented on the right side of the foil by a portrait of the first President of Czechoslovakia, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and a QR code. The holographic print does not alter the basic design of the CZK 5,000 banknote, which remains legal tender in the Czech Republic.
A total of 200,000 banknotes with a holographic print will be available from 22 September 2026 onwards at the CNB’s cash offices in Prague, Brno, Hradec Králové and Ostrava while stocks last. Members of the public will be able to exchange them for other banknotes or coins with a total face value of CZK 5,000. Details of the exchange procedure at the CNB’s cash offices and the design of the banknote will be published in September 2026.
New commemorative banknotes
The CNB will issue two commemorative CZK 100 banknotes in late 2027 or early 2028. The first will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Václav Havel’s first election as President of the Czech Republic, which falls on 26 January 2028. The commemorative CZK 100 banknote marking this anniversary will be issued in a symbolic print run of 35,000.
A commemorative CZK 100 banknote will also mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of operations at the Banknote Printing Works of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia in Prague, which falls on 30 May 2028. At the time, it was one of the most modern printing works in Europe and, as early as the 1930s, produced some of the finest examples of Czechoslovak banknote design. To mark the anniversary, the CNB will issue 20,000 commemorative CZK 100 banknotes.
The commemorative banknotes will be available for purchase from the CNB’s contractual partners authorised to sell numismatic material. The face value of the commemorative banknotes is not their selling price. The latter reflects, among other things, the costs of their preparation and production, including the application of security features. The issue dates of the commemorative banknotes will be announced well in advance of their release on the CNB website in the Numismatics section.
