CNB is issuing a commemorative coin dedicated to Petr Vok of Rožmberk

The Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a commemorative silver coin depicting Petr Vok. 2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of the last of the line of the Rožmberks, an important aristocratic family. The CZK 200 coin will go on sale on 19 October 2011.

“Given the significance of Petr Vok for the artistic and cultural heritage of our country, the Czech National Bank is also commemorating this important and last member of the Rožmberk family by issuing a commemorative coin,” said CNB Bank Board member Pavel Řežábek, who oversees the activities of the Cash and Payment Systems Department.

The coins are minted in two quality versions. A total of 8,300 normal quality coins and 10,400 proof quality coins will be minted. The obverse side of the CZK 200 coin shows the monastery at Vyšší Brod, the final resting place of Petr Vok, and the broken coat of arms of the Rožmberks symbolising the end of the family line. The reverse side depicts Petr Vok in period costume. The coin was designed by Jaroslav Bejvl (obverse side) and Petr Horák (reverse side).

Petr Vok of Rožmberk is known to the public not only for his reputation as an extravagant nobleman, but also for his artistic and cultural legacy. One of the largest libraries in Central Europe was established at Třeboň with Vok’s support. At Bechyně castle he put together fine collections of art, natural objects and physical equipment. He also lived in other towns in South Bohemia, for example Jindřichův Hradec and Český Krumlov. Petr Vok of Rožmberk died in Třeboň on 6 November 1611.
