CNB Governor Aleš Michl again among the three highest-rated central bankers in the EU
Czech National Bank Governor Aleš Michl has ranked among the three highest-rated central bank governors in the European Union for the second consecutive year. This is according to the Central Banker Report Cards 2026, the annual ranking compiled by the magazine Global Finance.
The assessment takes into account factors such as results in combating inflation and a central bank’s ability to maintain its political independence. Governor Aleš Michl earned an A- grade in this year's Central Banker Report Cards. “At the Czech National Bank, I advocate a clear direction: a conservative approach to fighting inflation and the courage to shape the future. In monetary policy, we remain hawkish, with low inflation over the long term as our objective. At the same time, we are actively testing AI and new technologies and developing instant payments as infrastructure for the digital economy. Without low inflation, it is impossible to plan for the future. And without innovation, it is impossible to create the future. I greatly appreciate this award. It is the result of the work of the entire CNB team,” said CNB Governor Aleš Michl.
Polish central bank Governor Adam Glapiński also received an A- in 2026. The three highest-rated central bank governors in the EU also included Danish central bank Governor Christian Kettel Thomsen, who, as in the previous year, earned an A+.
In its assessment, Global Finance highlighted that governors who received one of the A-category ratings demonstrated discipline, independence and sound judgement at a time of persistent inflation pressures, uncertain economic growth and rapidly changing economic conditions. Through their approach, they helped maintain price stability in an unpredictable global environment.
Global Finance has published the Central Banker Report Cards since 1994. Over that period, the Central Banker Report Cards have become a respected distinction in the international financial community. Governors receive grades on a scale from A+ to F. The full results for 2026 will be published in Global Finance's October print and digital editions.
