The CNB comments on the figures for August 2026
The volume of loans to resident households and non-financial corporations increased again in August 2026 compared with the previous month. Loans to households rose by 0.7%, while loans to non-financial corporations increased by 1.3%.
The quality of the loan portfolio remains very good. The share of non-performing loans to households remained close to its historical low recorded in June 2026. As regards non-financial corporations, the share of non-performing loans is at its lowest level since monitoring began in January 2002.
The total assets of the banking sector in the Czech Republic increased further in August, reaching CZK 12,216 billion. The month-on-month increase was driven mainly by loans to residents on the assets side and deposits of residents on the liabilities side. In year-on-year terms, growth in total assets accelerated slightly again and approached 8%.
The volume of client loans to residents increased by 0.9% month on month in August, reaching CZK 4,833 billion. Loans to households are the largest component, accounting for 57% of client loans. Their growth slowed by 0.2 percentage point compared with the previous month, to 0.7%. Housing loans account for the largest share of loans to households. With only a few exceptions, their growth has remained stable over the long term and stood at 0.7% in August.
Loans to non-financial corporations are the second largest component of resident client loans, accounting for 34% of client loans. Their volume is much more volatile than that of loans to households. Nevertheless, it increased for the tenth consecutive month in August, with the growth accelerating by 0.7 percentage point to 1.3%. Long-term loans account for the largest share of loans to non-financial corporations and have been increasing continuously since July 2025.
