Commemorative silver CZK 500 coin with a “Tatra 603 car” inlay

On 14 June 2023 the Czech National Bank is issuing a CZK 500 commemorative silver coin with a “Tatra 603 car” inlay. The coin is minted from an alloy containing 925 parts silver and 75 parts copper and is issued in two versions, normal quality and proof quality, which differ in surface treatment and edge marking. Normal quality coins have milled edges. Proof-quality coins have a highly polished field, a matt relief and a plain edge with the inscription “ČNB * OSOBNÍ AUTOMOBIL * T603 *”. The total weight of the CZK 500 coin, including the inlay, is 26.1 g. Its diameter is 40 mm and its thickness is 2.6 mm. The silver body of the coin weighs 25 g. The silver inlay with a black coating has a purity of 999 and weighs 1.1 g. The issue is limited to a maximum of 30,000 coins.

The obverse side of the CZK 500 coin features a frontal view of the Tatra 603. Part of the car’s dashboard and steering wheel are shown in the upper part of the coin. The text “ČESKÁ” is located at the left-hand edge of the coin and the text “REPUBLIKA” is near the lower edge of the coin. The lower half of the coin shows a tiled floor. The denomination and abbreviated monetary unit “500 Kč” are located near the right-hand edge of the coin. The mark of the Czech Mint, in the form of the letters “Č” and “M”, is located to the left of the denomination. The reverse side of the coin is horizontally divided into two parts. The upper part features a diagonal view of the Tatra 603. The lower part of the coin shows a technical drawing of the car from a side view perspective and a partial top-view technical drawing of the car. The side view of the car is in the form of a black inlay. The texts “TATRA 603” and “2023” are separated by a dot near the upper edge of the coin. The car brand logo is to the left of the side view of the car. The initials of the designer of the coin Petra Brodská – made up of the intertwined letters “P” and “B” – are located near the right-hand edge of the coin.

Each coin comes with a grey catalogue card containing a description and the relief of the coin.

The Czech National Bank is simultaneously issuing a set comprising a commemorative coin and a medal featuring the motif of the Tatra 603 car. Based on the final design produced by Luboš Charvát, who died in 2022, the medal is a homage to this leading figure of Czech coin design. The set is issued in a batch of 2,000.

The Czech National Bank sells its commemorative coins through contractual partners licensed to trade in numismatic material.
