Turnovers on the foreign exchange market - survey conducted in the week of 24-28 April 2006

The Czech National Bank surveys the average daily turnovers on the foreign exchange market semi-annually - in April and in October. In the most recent survey conducted in the week of 24-28 April 2006 the daily average turnover rose by 1,499.4 million USD (42.1%) to USD 5,054.9 million compared to October 2005. Forwards and swaps had the major role in this growth, as their daily turnover rose by USD 988.4 million (38.1%). Spot operations rose by USD 438.6 million (47.5%). The option market turnover rose by USD 72.4 million (184.1%), but the share of options in the total turnover remained small (2.2%).

Regarding the share of individual currency pairs, USD/CZK has the largest portion of the total turnover (36.2%) with an increase of USD 393.3 million (27.3%). The share of EUR/CZK is 23.6% with an increase of USD 292.5 million (32.5%) in the most recent surveyed period. USD/CZK traditionally plays the major role on the forwards and swaps market (48.3%), whereas on the spot market its share is only 6.7% compared to the EUR/CZK share of 45.8%.

According to information provided by the reporting banks the activity in the surveyed period was slightly above average.
