Turnovers on the foreign exchange market - survey conducted in the week of 19-23 October 2009

The Czech National Bank surveys the average daily turnovers on the foreign exchange market quarterly – in January, April, July and in October. In the most recent survey conducted in the week of 19-23 October 2009 the daily average turnover increased by 462.9 million USD (7.4 %) to USD 6,694.1 million compared to July 2009. Only forwards and swaps were growing in the surveyed period, as their daily turnover rose by USD 546,8 million (10.4 %). Spot transactions declined by USD 17.9 million (-2.1 %). The options turnover decreased by USD 66.1 million (-58.2 %).

Regarding the share of individual currency pairs, USD/CZK has the largest portion of the total turnover (40.7 %) with an increase of USD 394.6 million (17 %). The share of EUR/CZK is 26.2 % with a decrease of USD 462 million (-20.8 %) in the most recent surveyed period. EUR/CZK played the major role on the spot market (64.2 %), whereas on the forwards and swaps market its share is only 20.3 % compared to the USD/CZK share of 45.5%.

According to information provided by the reporting banks the activity in the surveyed period was average.
