Turnovers on the foreign exchange market - survey conducted in the week of 17-21 October 2005

The Czech National Bank surveys the average daily turnovers on the foreign exchange market semi-annually - in April and in October. In the most recent survey conducted in the week of 17-21 October 2005 the daily average turnover decreased by 412.1 million USD (-10.4%) to USD 3,555.5 million compared to April 2005. Spot operations had the biggest drop, as their daily turnover declined by USD 230.8 million (-20.0%). Forwards and swaps decreased by USD 80.9 million (-3.0%). The option market turnover dropped by USD 100.5 million (-71.9%), the share of options in the total turnover thus narrowed to 1.1%.

 

Regarding the share of individual currency pairs, USD/CZK has again the largest portion of the total turnover (40.4%) with a drop of USD 130.4 million (-8.3%). The share of EUR/CZK is 25.3% with a decrease of USD 54.8 million (-5.7%) in the most recent surveyed period. USD/CZK traditionally plays the major role on the forward and swap markets (53.6%), whereas on the spot market its share is only 4.9% compared to the EUR/CZK share of 48.4%.

 

According to information provided by the reporting banks the activity in the surveyed period was average.
