Commemorative coins to mark the anniversary of the arrival of Constantine and Methodius and of the Velvet Revolution
In 2013, the Czech National Bank will issue a gold coin commemorating the 1150th anniversary of the arrival in Moravia of Constantine and Methodius, missionaries to the Slavs. In 2014, it will issue a commemorative silver coin to mark the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. These additions to the schedule of issuance in 2011–2015 were approved by the CNB Bank Board.
The CZK 200 silver coin will commemorate the events of November 1989. “The artists taking part in the competition to design the coin will face the tough challenge of capturing the most significant moments of 1989, with which Václav Havel as the first post-Revolution President was so inextricably linked. His passing recently showed us in a very painful and clear way that it is also worth commemorating events of recent history, including their prime movers,” said Czech National Bank Governor Miroslav Singer.
The Czech National Bank will issue the silver CZK 200 coin to mark the 25th anniversary of 17 November 1989 in 2014. A nationwide competition for the design of the coin will be announced on the CNB website in 2013.
The CNB has also added to its schedule of issuance a gold coin to mark the 1150th anniversary of the arrival in Moravia of Constantine and Methodius, missionaries to the Slavs. This CZK 10,000 coin will be put into circulation in 2013. A competition for the coin designs will be announced in the course of 2012.
Following these additions, the 2011–2015 schedule comprises a total of 23 CZK 200 silver coins commemorating events and personalities in the fields of art and culture, science, technology and sport. The schedule also includes a cycle of five CZK 500 commemorative silver coins featuring important personalities of Czech cultural life, a cycle of ten CZK 5,000 gold coins called “Bridges in the Czech Republic”, and three special issues of CZK 10,000 gold coins.
