Castles to feature on CNB gold coins

The Czech National Bank has unveiled a new schedule of issuance for commemorative coins in 2016–2020. It will consist of two thematic cycles. The cycle of ten CZK 5,000 gold coins will commemorate castles of the Czech Republic. The cycle of CZK 500 silver coins will have a unifying theme of anniversaries relating to the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic.

The cycle of gold coins dedicated to the best known Czech and Moravian castles is a follow-up to previous thematic cycles which presented architectural monuments and technical heritage sites in the Czech Republic. We expect it to meet with a similarly positive response from the public,” said CNB Board Member Lubomír Lízal.

Since the issuance period features many major anniversaries relating to the foundation of the independent Czechoslovakia, we have decided to issue one or two coins every year to mark these dates,” added Mr Lízal.

The schedule of issuance also includes special CZK 10,000 gold coins struck to mark the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia (2018) and the creation of the Czechoslovak currency (2019).

The cycle of commemorative CZK 500 silver coins will include coins to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle of Zborov (2017), the adoption of the Washington Declaration (2018) and the adoption of the Czechoslovak Constitution (2020).

As usual, the schedule of issuance also includes commemorative CZK 200 silver coins to be issued three or four times a year, depicting anniversaries of prominent personalities and important events in Czech history. For example, they will mark the 450th anniversary of the birth of Renaissance physician Jan Jessenius (2016), the 300th anniversary of the birth of Empress Maria Theresa (2017), the 500th anniversary of the issuance of the Klaudyán map (2018), the 100th anniversary of the construction of the first Czech-produced aeroplane (2019) and the 200th anniversary of the birth of writer Božena Němcová (2020).
