Not to be missed

The year 2026 marks 100 years since the National Bank of Czechoslovakia began operations. To commemorate this anniversary, the Czech National Bank is issuing a commemorative banknote and opening a new exhibition at the CNB Visitor Centre dedicated to Alois Rašín. It also looks back at the history of the first independent Czechoslovak central bank and one of the earliest predecessors of the CNB.

Five-thousand-koruna banknote with an additional print

To mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia, the Czech National Bank will issue a circulating five-thousand-koruna banknote with a holographic print. This will be the first time such a feature is used on a Czech circulating banknote. The print will include the “100 let NBČ” (100 Years of the NBC) logo.

The five-thousand-koruna banknote (2023 version) will feature a unique holographic print in the form of a foil with nano-effects applied using hot stamping along the edge of the face side of the banknote. The foil will be in a metallic silver finish with transitions in colour shades.

The holographic feature includes the “100 let NBČ” logo, designed by the painter Jan Solpera, who also created the typeface used on Czech banknotes. It also features a QR code linking to a dedicated CNB webpage and a portrait of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia.

The holographic print does not alter the fundamental design of the five-thousand-koruna banknote, which remains legal tender in the Czech Republic. It continues the CNB’s tradition of issuing circulating banknotes with an additional print, following those issued in 2019 to mark the centenary of the Czechoslovak koruna and in 2023 to commemorate 30 years of the CNB and the Czech currency.

A total of 200,000 banknotes with a holographic print will be available from 22 September 2026 onwards at the CNB’s cash offices in Prague, Brno, Hradec Králové and Ostrava while stocks last. Members of the public will be able to exchange them for other banknotes or coins with a total face value of CZK 5,000. Details of the exchange procedure at the CNB’s cash offices and the design of the banknote will be published in September 2026.
