Commemorative silver coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of regular broadcasting by Czechoslovak radio

On 17 May 2023, the Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a CZK 200 commemorative silver coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of regular broadcasting by Czechoslovak radio. The coin is minted from an alloy containing 925 parts silver and 75 parts copper and is issued in two versions, normal quality and proof quality, which differ in surface treatment and edge marking. Proof-quality coins have a highly polished field, a matt relief and a plain edge with the inscription in Czech “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA * Ag 0.925 * 13 g *”. Normal quality coins have milled edges. The coin is 31 mm in diameter, weighs 13 g and is 2.25 mm thick. As with any other coins, deviations in diameter of 0.1 mm and thickness of 0.15 mm are allowed. Upward deviations in weight of 0.26 g and silver content of 1% are permitted.

Coin description

The obverse side of the coin features a radio microphone, with stylised radio waves emanating from transmission masts on each of its sides – one on the left and two on the right. The historical building of the Kbely broadcasting station is in the background in the right-hand bottom part of the coin. The text “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” is written around the lower edge of the coin. The denomination and abbreviated monetary unit “200 Kč” are located in the bottom part of the coin. The mark of the Czech Mint, in the form of the letters “Č” and “M”, is situated at the right-hand edge of the coin. The reverse side of the coin features the historical tent which is associated with the beginnings of radio broadcasting. There is a broadcasting mast behind the tent, the left part of which is partially covered by Czechoslovak Radio’s historical logo from 1991. The texts “ČESKOSLOVENSKÝ ROZHLAS” and “1923–2023” are written around the outer circle of the coin. The initials of the designer of the coin Marie Šeborová, made up of the letters “M” and “Š”, are located next to the tent at the right-hand edge of the coin.
