Commemorative silver coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Czechoslovak Constitution and the founding of the Constitutional Court of the Czechoslovak Republic

On 26 February 2020, the Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a CZK 500 commemorative silver coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Czechoslovak Constitution and the founding of the Constitutional Court of the Czechoslovak Republic. The coin is minted from an alloy containing 925 parts silver and 75 parts copper and is issued in two versions, normal quality and proof quality, which differ in surface treatment and edge marking. Proof-quality coins have a highly polished field, a matt relief and a plain edge with the inscription “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA * Ag 0.925 * 25 g *”. Normal quality coins have milled edges. The coin is 40 mm in diameter, weighs 25 g and is 2.75 mm thick.  As with any other coins, deviations in diameter of 0.1 mm and thickness of 0.15 mm are allowed. Upward deviations in weight of 0.50 g and silver content of 1% are permitted.

The obverse side of the CZK 500 coin bears the motif of a part of the original binding of the 1920 Czechoslovak Constitution dominated by the medium-sized national coat-of-arms. Written in the upper part of the coin is the name of the state in Czech “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA”. Below it is the denomination and abbreviated monetary unit “500 Kč”. The mark of the Czech Mint, in the form of the letters “Č” and “M”, is located near the right-hand edge of the coin. The reverse side of the coin features a repeating partial motif of the original binding of the 1920 Czechoslovak Constitution, into which is incorporated the small national coat-of-arms in the upper part of the coin and the entrance portal to the Constitutional Court in Brno in the lower part of the coin. The centre of the coin contains the texts “ČESKOSLOVENSKÁ ÚSTAVA”, “ÚSTAVNÍ SOUD” and “1920–2020” on four lines. To the right of the entrance portal are the initials of the designer of the coin, the sculptor Zbyňek Fojtů, in the form of the letters “F” and “Z”.

Each coin comes with a cream-coloured catalogue card containing a description and the relief of the coin.

The Czech National Bank sells its commemorative coins through contractual partners licensed to trade in numismatic material.
